We will explore composition, colour, backgrounds, and learn how to create the environement that will be the setting of the action, how to tell a story in a single picture, thus bringing our characters to life.

FABULOUS BEASTS - February Half Term 3D art Workshop

Inspired by the 'The Book of Imaginary Beings' of Jorge Luis Borges, informed by real animals and people, we will explore the images that are evoqued by the Sphinx, the Cheshire Cat, the Chimera or the Eastern Dragon, we will combine various elements of different animals and create fabulous monsters.

During this workshop, you will experiment with sketching from life at the Natural History Museum. You will then use your sketches and create drawings of your Fabulous Beast , before making a 3d model.

The complete series of illustrations for The Book of Imaginary Beings was done by the graduate students in the Department of Illustration and Art of the Book at the Vakalo School of Art and Design in Athens, Greece.

This workshop coincides with the 'Myths & Monsters' exhibition at the Horniman Museum.

2010 is the 10th anniversary of Painting Explorers! I look forward to wonderful hours of discoveries and inspiring artwork!

The Winter Term will start on Thursday 7 January with a new group and 9 January for the mini Explorers.

Due to public demand, one of the Xmas workshop will be a MANGA Workshop!

During the first workshop, on 12 & 13 December you will experiment with plaster and recycled material in order to create fabulous beings.

For the second workshop, on 19 & 20 December, you will look at animals, machines and magical traditional beings - fairies, gargoiles, unicorns, dragons.... and invent your own Modern Mythical MANGA CHARACTERS.

Last week of October was busy with our first Costume Making Workshop. A group of 6 inventive & talented Explorers created some impressive outfits out of recycled theater sails that were left from a theatre production of 'Sink or Swim' I took part on some years ago. They also made fantastic Masks in plaster.

On the last day of the workshop, they were joined by a group of Mini Explorers masqued with the beautiful 'Animal spirits Masks' they had created during the first half of the term. Some Old Explorers, droped by to join what was a very merry party!

3D ART WORKSHOPS

Unicorns, dragons, sirens, centaurs, banshees, winged horses, sprites, elves and gargoyles
....Explore the world of mythical beings. Imagine modern magical creatures.

From sketching to adding the last coat of varnish, the last twinkle of glitter, experiment with simple 3D techniques and create wonderful sculptures in mixed media.

2 or 4 days spanning two weekends

So, the classes are starting a little later than usual... but you'll be happy to know that we will do some 3D work this term with the youngest ones. There is also a treat for half term: a costume and mask making workshop during which you'll experiment with a wide range of recycled material to create a spooky garb to go trick or treating!
